Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the status of private medical insurance participation for severely ill patients and to check their medical use according to whether or not to join private medical insurance.

Methods: This study used the original data of the 7th "2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey" and analyzed 536 persons who were not missing in questionnaires among 19 years and over. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors affecting private medical insurance subscription. Independent sample T-test and regression analysis were conducted to analyze the effect of private medical insurance participation on the number of medical use.

Results: 60.8% of the subjects were in private medical insurance. In the case of elderly, low-income, and medical aid, they were inclined to join private medical insurance. However, the effect of private health insurance coverage on medical use and frequency of use was not significant.

Conclusion: The results of this study show that the severely ill patients decide to use medical care regardless of whether they have private medical insurance or not. Therefore, it is necessary to select the groups that do not have private medical insurance and to prepare government policies for health care.
